Study Blames Men with At-Home Wives for Sexism in Workplace
Could your boss's stay-at-home wife be the reason you were passed over for a much-deserved promotion?
It sounds far-fetched, but a new study concludes that if a male supervisor has a wife who doesn’t work outside the home, he is likely to exhibit attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that undermine the role of women in the workplace.
The study - conducted by Harvard, NYU and the University of Utah - found that "whether a man’s wife works or not has a clear transference to his views of his female colleagues and the advancement of female subordinates,” as ForbesWoman reported.
“But what’s worse, as research shows that employed men with stay-at-home wives tend to represent the upper echelons of organizations and, concurrently, occupy the most powerful positions, whether their wives go to work each morning or head off to yoga class has far-reaching implications on women in the workplace in a much broader sense.”
So basically, if you've ever gotten that feeling - the moment when you realize that your male superior is never going to take you seriously as Steve down the hall who watches YouTube videos at work all day and fowards chain e-mails - it's probably not just in your head.
