Professional Birth Photographers: Ready for Your Vagina Close-up?
Say cheese! An increasing number of parents-to-be are hiring professional photographers to join them in the labor and delivery room to document the birthing process.
That's right. According to the New York Times, birth photography is “a small but growing profession devoted to chronicling a rite of passage that is no less significant than a wedding”
In fact, the professional association of birth photographers boasts a nationwide membership of over 400.
A California mother who paid a photographer nearly $2,000 to take photos of the birth of her first child told the Times: “I want to see the moment when I’m in labor. That moment when both my husband and I look to see what the sex is? That’s something that I want to see happen.”
One professional birth photographer says she averages five births a month and charges first-time clients $700. She tries to arrive when a woman is six centimeters dilated, to capture the later stages of labor.
Now, I am not yet a mom, but you better believe that no one is ever taking photos of me pushing a human being into the world. Sweaty, exhausted and in pain is just not my best look.
What do you think about this new trend? Would you ever hire a birth photographer?
