A rare earless bunny that was on the way to his fifteen minutes of fame was killed when a television cameraman accidentally stepped on him.
17-day-old Til was born without ears as the result of a genetic defect. The animal was poised to be its German zoo's star attraction when tragedy occurred. As media assembled for the press conference that would have unveiled little Til to the world, the rabbit hopped behind a cameraman in his hay-strewn stall and was crushed when the cameraman took a step backward.
Zoo director Uwe Dempewolf told Spiegel magazine the bunny did not suffer: "It was a direct hit."
"Everyone here is upset," Dempewolf said, adding that the cameraman was "distraught."
Til's body will reportedly be frozen before the zoo decides if he will be stuffed.
