Mistrial Declared in John Edwards Trial After Jury Deadlocks
The trial of John Edwards drew to a close today, and the former Democratic presidential candidate left court a free man.
He was found not guilty on one of six counts of campaign fraud, and the jury remained hopelessly deadlocked on the other five charges, leading the judge to declare a mistrial.
Edwards was accused of masterminding a plan to use nearly $1 million in campaign contributions to hide his pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, from the public during his run for the White House in 2008.
He faced a maximum of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine if convicted of the charges.
The jury -- 8 men, 4 women -- reached today's verdict after 9 days of deliberations. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors would retry Edwards on the other counts.
