Dead Frogs Found in Bagged Spinach

Dead Frogs Found in Bagged Spinach

Well, it's a bad news day for bagged spinach.

Kroger just announced a 15 state recall of spinach possibly contaminated with Listeria - and across the pond, people are finding dead frogs in their bagged greens.

Talk about a mealbreaker.

26-year-old Sarah Moss was the second London resident to find a dead frog in a bag of spinach greens purchased from grocery chain Tesco.

According to the Hackney Gazette, she made the gruesome discovery halfway through her salad....

"It must have been after five minutes that my fork went through something that wasn’t meant to be there, and pierced this poor little frog. The frog hadn’t been damaged so you wonder at what stage of the process it managed to get in."

She added that her lunch companion "was sick several times as she is a vegetarian.”

(I got a little sick writing this article.)

And as was mentioned earlier, she's not the only one to stumble upon an unexpected bit of green in her greens. Olly Goldenberg also found a deceased amphibian in his Tesco spinach bag.

"My wife served the spinach with some eggs and cheese. I sat down to start eating and saw the frog," he told reporters. "My wife is breast-feeding and is feeling sick at the thought of it as she had already eaten most of the spinach on her plate."

Moss was compensated with £10 gift voucher by Tesco and Goldenberg was refunded his money, but he criticized the grocery chain for the way they handled the incident.

"This is not about money, there is something wrong here and this is below the standards you would expect," he said.

Meanwhile, a Tesco spokesperson told media outlets that they are investigating how these dead frogs are winding up in spinach.

"We set ourselves very high standards for the safety of our food and for customer service, and we’re really sorry that they weren’t met on this occasion. We have apologised to our customer, and we are urgently investigating how this happened with our supplier."

Yikes. I'm suddenly reconsidering that spinach salad I brought for lunch today....
