An unusually severe flu season has caused Boston to declare a public health emergency.
So far, officials have confirmed 700 cases of flu in the city and 18 flu-related deaths throughout the state.
"This is the worst flu season we've seen since 2009, and people should take the threat of flu seriously," said Mayor Thomas Menino in a news release.
"The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to get the flu shot."
Massachusetts was one of 29 states reporting high levels of "influenza-like illness," according to the most recent weekly flu advisory issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
