A few weeks ago, start-up toy company GoldieBlox posted this video and the interwebz exploded, as they say.And at first, all caught up in the cuteness of the three little actresses and the cleverness of the way the brand altered the lyrics to Beastie Boys’ song “Girls” to accompany this spot (apparently without the Boys’ permission, but that’s not the point), I got excited watching it.And then like a mosquito bite on ...

If there's one thing my husband hates, it's making small talk with strangers. It's not that he doesn't know how to talk to people - quite the opposite, actually. It's the insignificant exchanges, the meaningless back-and-forth with another parent in the grocery store line, that leave my husband fumbling and uncomfortable. The interesting thing about having two ...

The first year that our Elf on the Shelf “R.W.” visited from the South Pole, my husband and I took on the task very cautiously. We were unsure of what the task entailed - we knew that we needed to move our Elf each night, however we lacked creativity. R.W. just moved. He didn't get into any shenanigans, just hopped from lamp-to-picture frame-to-Christmas Tree. We were novices, we weren't sure how much ...

Two articles in the New York Times and the Atlantic Monthly describe new research that unearths the phenomena of women’s so-called “indirect aggression.” Unfortunately, the findings are described in distinctly negative terms. “The Evolution of Bitchiness,” is the Atlantic’s title. “A Cold War Fought by Women” is the slightly less derogatory title chosen by the Times. These august publications are two of the oldest, WASPiest, Harvard-est publications in the nation, devoured by our ...

Once every few months at my kids’ school, they put on a “talent” show during lunch time. I use quotation marks because the show is open to anyone who wants to participate, so sometimes there’s talent, and then sometimes there are a bunch of second grade girls dancing around to a Katy Perry song. But it doesn't matter, because talent isn’t the point. The point is that the kids feel confident enough ...

There is one big problem with the awesome and much adored Santa. Mainly, that he is fictional. This becomes problematic because it means every family has a different Santa, which causes consistency issues. We've run into this problem with the Tooth Fairy as well. As parents, our natural instinct is to protect our children from harm, disappointment and failure. But doing so is not always in our kids’ best interests. When my son was in fourth grade, his Little League team-- a team we affectionately called the Bad News Bears - was on a 0-7-game losing streak with no apparent signs of a mid-season comeback. After a particularly dreadful loss, he threw his baseball cap to the ground and told ...

In the new animated film Free Birds, Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson play turkeys who travel back in time to get off the Thanksgiving menu for good and although the friendship between their characters has a rocky start, the camaraderie is certainly evident off-screen. During our interview, the two traded quips, jokes and even finish each other's sentences. It's not hard to imagine what filming must have been like... in fact, they joked that director Jimmy Hayward had to separate them for goofing off.

In 2012, Malala Yousafzai nearly died. The teenager was riding home from school when a Taliban gunman climbed on board her bus, pointed a pistol at her head and pulled the trigger. Miraculously, Malala survived and the 16-year-old has since become a global advocate for human rights. Her memoir, "I am Malala," was released Tuesday and that phrase has become a rallying cry for the right to education, especially for women and girls.
There's nothing I love more than opening up my mailbox and finding a greeting card from a friend or family member. It's the best surprise and totally brightens my day.
When I was in college, my roommate (who went on to become a buyer for Lucky Brand) had one fashion rule that's stuck with me over the years: "Don't cheap out on shoes and handbags." Her point was that you should pay for quality when it comes to pieces that you're going to use for years. Plus there's the added bonus that a good pair of boots and a sleek tote can make the most boring jeans and t-shirt outfit look elegant and pulled together. So if you're going to splurge on something this fall, here are some beautiful bags we absolutely love:

If you have a daughter in high school or college, you've almost certainly warned her a hundred or so times to NEVER put down her drink or leave it unattended. That's because the problem with date rape drugs like GHB and ketamine is that they're odorless, colorless and tasteless. So if something gets slipped into a drink, the victim probably wouldn't realize until it's too late. Enter DrinkSavvy - a new startup that hopes to fight sexual assault by alerting people to what might be in their cup.
When tragedy strikes, it's hard for parents to know how to explain news headlines about shootings or other disasters to children without overly scaring them. Kids are like little sponges, they take in much more than we realize and it's important to address any fears and concerns they may have. "Am I safe? Who would do such a thing? Why?" There are no easy answers. It's hard to explain how something so terrible could happen - especially when we're still trying to make sense of it ourselves.
Yesterday, Brooke Burke shared her DWTS cast wish list - and today the official line-up for Season 17 of Dancing with the Stars was revealed on Good Morning America. With contenders like The Jersey Shore's Snooki (signature dance move - the fist pump) and Elizabeth Berkley (showed off her moves as an exotic dancer in Showgirls), the competition is sure to be fierce and full of surprises.
If watching Miley Cyrus perform at the VMAs made you question everything you know about music, we've got a clip that will restore your faith that all is right with world. On Friday night, Kristin Chenoweth performed at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. At one point, she began talking with audience members, asking if they knew the song "For Good," from the Broadway hit "Wicked." She pulled Sarah Horn up onstage to sing a bit of the song, and what happened next was pure magic.
Did you need more proof that Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and owner of my heart, is the very best? The new dad sat down with CNN for his first official interview since the birth of his son George and no, he could not be any more adorable when he gushes about his little boy.
This week's Cuteness Overload is dedicated to Humphrey, an adorable chocolate lab who really needs to start pulling his weight around the house. I hate to say it but the guy is a total deadbeat. For the past seven years, he's been unemployed and crashing rent-free on my friend Stacy's couch. Last weekend, we ordered pizza and (as usual) he didn't even offer to chip in. "Ok," I thought. "Maybe he's just not hungry." But then he stared at us the ENTIRE time we ate until everyone was uncomfortable.
Here at ModernMom, we have a philosophy that the best way to kick off the weekend is with an adorable animal video. And so, since today is Friday, I found myself wandering around the Internet this morning in search of a super-cute bit of awesomeness. You know, something like "Mango Loves Milkshake" or that one of baby pandas playing on a slide.
It's almost time to send your kids back to school and you know what that means... homework is coming. After spending 7(ish) hours a day sitting in a classroom, it's hard to get those butts back in the seat to study! Decorating a student's work space can make it considerably more inviting, though. A fun and fashionable work space can make homework seem more like an activity and less like a punishment, so try out these simple DIY work space decorations! Coffee Can Organizers
If you've ever watched FernGully or Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, you know that many classic children's movies have scenes or plot points that aren't exactly kid-friendly. There are kidnappings (Hook, Labyrinth, 101 Dalmatians), neglect (Matilda, The Secret Garden) and dead parents - so many dead parents (Bambi, Lion King, Finding Nemo, Land Before Time). Seriously, you do not want to be the mom of the main character in a Disney movie, because you're probably not going to make it past the prologue.
Flashback! Geena Davis gets back in her Rockford Peaches uniform more than 20 years after A League of Their Own and I just shouted "there's no crying in baseball" at my confused co-workers. (Us Weekly)
This morning did not start out well for me. I woke up late, I forgot to stick my laptop in my bag, I tripped - hard, like fell to the ground - on the way to my car and ripped a hole in my favorite jeans. And then I saw a corgi. Let's talk about corgis for a minute. Whether it's because of their oversized ears or their comically stumpy legs, it's almost impossible not to smile when you see one. Seriously. Just try having a bad day with one of these little fellows around. Which leads me to my point: Corgis make everything better.

If we've learned anything from the train wreck that is Lindsay Lohan, it's that fame and fortune can be incredibly hard to handle when acquired at a young age. It's not easy to be thrust into the spotlight before you're old enough to buy a lottery ticket... and it's starting to look like Justin Bieber might be cracking under the pressure.

As the holidays approach, mailboxes begin to overflow with Christmas cards from friends, family, people you haven't seen since high school Some are simple, some are silly and some are just plain awkward looking. Themes can range from color coordinating outfits to "funny" poses or backdrops. But years later, you can be sure that someone, somewhere will still have that faded card hanging on their fridge - so better make it count! Here are a few celebrity holiday cards from year's past:

This is just a manufactured fantasy," said NASA’s astrobiologist David Morrison.

So much of the modern courtship takes place through text message, online chat and e-mails. And since we are living in the digital age, so why not crowdsource relationship advice? That's the premise behind HeTexted.com, a new website devoted to helping girls read between the lines of every vague or confusing text message they receive. "Now you can insert his texts, emails, BBMs or Facebook messages and get some feedback from other girls going through the same thing," reads the mission statement.

She explained that the message was meant for some of her neighbors, with whom she has been having an ongoing dispute.
A family in Indianapolis owes a debt of gratitude to their dog, who managed to thwart a potential kidnapping after two armed robbers broke in on Tuesday morning. New mom Nayeli Garzon-Jimenez was home alone with her infant daughter when she heard an odd sound coming from the back door. Holy guacamole! November 14th is National Spicy Guacamole Day (not to be confused with National Guacamole Day, which is September 16th). Some might find it odd to have two separate days devoted to guacamole, but I find it to be both appropriate and well-deserved. Here is why: 1. Guacamole is the most delicious dip in the history of appetizers. Seriously, have you ever met anyone who actively dislikes guacamole? 2. It's made with avocados, which are full of "good" fat (although I do not always feel that good after eating an entire bowl of guac).
One of the things we write about pretty frequently is encouraging pregnant women to realize that it's ok to accept help - before and after the baby is born.
Remember TGIF? Of course you do. Who could forget quality programming like Step by Step (why did creepy older cousin Cody live in their driveway in his van?) and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But best of all was that sweet sweet half hour every Friday known as Boy Meets World. The show followed our favorite "Brillo head" Cory Matthews as he navigated the treacherous hallways of middle school, high school and beyond.
Yikes! Giving a whole new meaning to the term "sunburn," a recall is underway for some half-million bottles of Banana Boat spray-on sunscreen after a handful of people have caught on fire after applying the product and coming in contact with an open flame. That's right - your sunscreen might potentially BURST INTO FLAMES.

What happens when you type "completely wrong" into Google Image Search? Mitt Romney. Seriously, give it a try. We're not kidding. As many discovered today, searching Google Images for the phrase brings up a full page of photos of the Republican presidential candidate. While this may bring past examples of "Google bombs," or intentionally skewed Internet search results, for politicians' names, it's no prank.
If you grew up in the '90s, you probably remember Goosebumps. Written by R.L. Stine, the horror fiction series for children was known for its sweet cover art, scary titles and super cool 3-D lettering on the front (it was bumpy, like Goosebumps, get it?). But the iconic books aren't just about thrills and chills - no, no. There are some underlying life lessons that kids can find buried beneath all the gory and gruesome monsters, ghosts, aliens and more. Don't believe me? Check out a few things we can all learn from our favorite spooky tales:

Fans of "Desperate Housewives" watched her character raise six plus kids while living on Wisteria Lane, but Felicity Huffman doesn't just play a mom on TV. From the raw comedy of "Surprised Kitty" to the dramatic tension of "Maru the Cat vs. Box," who can resist the siren song of a good cat video? The Walker Art Center is a contemporary art museum in Minneapolis that, according to the Atlantic, is "widely considered one of the country's premier art institutions." (Until now?)
Lance Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has banned him for life from cycling. The agency's action came one day after the 40-year-old cyclist and cancer survivor decided not to fight the doping charges, calling the lastest USADA investigation an "unconstitutional witch hunt." This whole story feels confusing. I'm having trouble understanding why the burden of responsibility is on Armstrong to prove his innocence. Shouldn't the USADA have to prove his guilt before taking away his titles?
It looks like little Vivienne Jolie-Pitt is following in the footsteps of her famous parents. The four-year-old will make her movie debut alongside her mom in the upcoming film "Maleficent," which stars Angelina Jolie as the title character.

What the heck? The mega-popular retailer is letting faux-hypodermic needles filled with faux-heroin to be given away as novelty items to children in their stores. It's sounds crazy, but this is no "urban" legend. One of our regular contributors, Amy Weitman, was shopping with her daughter on the tourist-friendly Third Street Promenade last week and they decided to stop in at Urban Outfitters.
The sixth annual U.S. National Texting Championship took place on Wednesday, where 11 of the speediest texters in all the land competed for the ultimate texting title. Yes, this is a real thing. For the most part, writing about the Kardashians is an experience that makes me question everything about the world and the choices that have led me here. But not today. In what is quickly becoming my very favorite K-family news story of all time, Rob Kardashian shared via Twitter on Monday that he was headed for law school:
Could eggs be the new cigarettes? A new study published in the journal Atherosclerosis suggests that regularly eating egg yolks could be nearly as bad for your heart as smoking. The research showed that people who eat three or more yolks per week showed levels of plaque buildup two-thirds as much as smokers.
It's a snake! It's a penis! It's a... penis snake? Actually, it's neither. It's an Atretochoana eiseltiis, better known as a caecilian or a limbless amphibian. Engineers working on a dam in the Amazon discovered the snake-like creature at the bottom of Brazil's Madeira River, which was being drained as part of the construction project.
Since moving from New York (where everyone wears black and no one brushes their hair) to the sun-tanned, bleach blonde land of Los Angeles, I've learned one very valuable lesson: Anyone (and I mean ANYONE) can look good if they're willing to spend enough money on hair, make-up, wardrobe and personal training. Which has always made me wonder what celebrities would look like without professional assistance.
Remember last week, when everyone was busy wondering whether Kristen Stewart had a boob job? Turns out that she was busy cheating on her boyfriend. In the wake of the shocking revelation that she had an affair with the director of "Snow White and the Huntsman," Stewart has issued a public apology to her longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson:
Last week, the Jim Henson Company said they were severing ties with Chick-fil-A because of the restaurant chain's stance opposing gay marriage. Could your boss's stay-at-home wife be the reason you were passed over for a much-deserved promotion? It sounds far-fetched, but a new study concludes that if a male supervisor has a wife who doesn’t work outside the home, he is likely to exhibit attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that undermine the role of women in the workplace.

If your child has a favorite stuffed animal, than you're well aware that furry friends are more than toys - they're part of the family! (Remember when we lost Chickie?) That's why we just love this story: When 3-year-old Riley Carey-Brown dropped her stuffed bunny onto the train tracks, Boston T employees stopped an oncoming train to rescue "Nummy."
Back in October, we wrote about Jennifer Siebel Newsom's powerful new documentary Miss Representation. The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and has since aired a few times on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Newsom spoke today at TEDWomen about the effect that the media's portrayal of women has on our daughters.
The hit 1993 comedy "Mrs. Doubtfire" is one of those movies that seems sort of weird in retrospect. Let's review the premise - an unemployed (possibly manic/depressive) divorced dad who has lost custody of his kids dresses in drag and pretends to be a matronly housekeeper in order to stay in their lives. ... Yea, that's kind of creepy. Why did this come to our attention? Because the original trailer for this "family-friendly" flick has been recut into a horror film trailer and it's pretty amazing. Check it out below:

Andrews has written several children's books with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton including a New York Times best-selling series about a little girl who finds the princess inside of herself.
Maybe it's just me, but when I hear the phrase “My lunch came from the vending machine,” it doesn't typically bring to mind images of health and happiness. Vending machine meals are what you do in college, during your first years in the work force as an underpaid and overworked entry level employee, or when you’re low on time and running on empty. Chips, candy, soda... the glass-front dispensary has long been a symbol for all things junk food.
Burger King is testing out a new menu option in Nashville, Tennessee - the Bacon Sundae. And no, that's not a typo. The $2.49 dessert is apparently made up of vanilla ice cream covered in hot fudge and caramel sauce and topped with chunks of bacon. And all that is topped with a full strip of bacon. No word yet on whether this artery-clogging delicacy will pop up in restaurants nationwide, but in honor of the launch, we've put together a list of some other ridiculous innovative fast food creations.
