Alanis Morissette has opened up about her battle with post-partum depression following the birth of her son, Ever Imre, in December of 2010.
For more than a year after, she struggled with depression so severe she felt physical pain and struggled to complete even basic tasks.
In an interview with British magazine You, she spoke about her experience:
“The degree and intensity of my post-natal depression shocked me. I am predisposed to depression, but what surprised me this time was the physical pain. I hadn’t realized the depths to which you can ache – limbs, back, torso, head, everything hurt – and it went on for 15 months.”
The 38-year-old singer-songwriter said she “felt as if I was covered in tar and everything took 50 times more effort than normal. I wished I could have cried but there was no relief during that time; my version of depression is almost below crying where there is just despondency.”

Following therapy, Morissette says she feels “light and springy” now. She is grateful that her relationship with her son hasn’t been affected, but she does note that it “has strengthened since I got better in April.”
She also credits her husband, Mario “MC Souleye” Treadway, with supporting her through the “harrowing delivery” of her son and the months that followed. “My husband saved the day,” she said. “When I asked him, he would squeeze my head. At other times he would just be there and that was all I needed.”

Many moms suffer from post-partum depression – or “the baby blues.” Signs and symptoms include lack of interest in the baby, negative feelings towards the baby, lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness and guilt and even thoughts of death or suicide.
