Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor showed they still have what it takes at the London Olympics, bringing home their third consecutive gold medal for beach volleyball.
We just love these two. In fact, when we profiled our favorite hot Olympic mamas, Kerri made the list as mom of Joseph (3) and Sundance (2), two super cute little boys, with her beach volleyball playing hubby, Casey Jennings.
But the Walsh-Jennings family is getting a new member! This morning on the Today Show, the beach volleyball couple announced, “When I was throwing my body around fearlessly and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant. And today, I’m 11 weeks pregnant and feeling… pregnant.”
Apparently, she experienced mood swings and missed her period during the Olympics. At the time, her partner, May-Treanor, joked, “Maybe you’re pregnant.” Lo and behold, she actually was!
Discussing the timing of her pregnancy, Kerri told the Today Show that she and Casey had been trying to get pregnant about a month before the Olympics started. “I just felt like it would take me a while this time to get pregnant.”
This means that she has joined the list of “Moms Who Competed With a Bun in the Oven.” Malaysian Air Rifle shooter, Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi was seven months pregnant during the Olympics and has been dubbed the “most pregnant Olympian ever” by Sports Illustrated’s David Epstein. Also, archer Khatuna Lorig was four months pregnant when she competed in 1992 in Barcelona.
The other half of Walsh Jennings’ team, Misty May-Treanor retired after the London Olympics to start her family. “I want to be a mom and share time with my family. All of us as athletes sacrifice more on the family end than people realize.”
Congratulations to Kerri and her family!
