recycling question - easy ways?

The best thing that happened for us was the single large blue bin for recycling, no sorting needed. We put it right outside the back door and can open the door just part-way every day to dump all our recyclables in. If you don't have single-stream recycling, I have seen sets of bins, usually in threes, to help everyone sort. You can get them stacked one on top of the other or next to each other, and just label them simply so that the kids can participate. You might want categories for paper (check whether you should sort newspaper from other paper), cans, glass, and plastic bottles. If you can start a compost pile then the easiest thing I've seen to do inside is to have a wide-mouth jar with a tight-fitting lid for scraping vegetable peelings and leftovers into, although you shouldn't put animal proteins into it (meat, fish, eggs, dairy). Then once a week or so you can empty it onto your compost pile and turn the pile. Once you get into the habit it's not too hard :)!
