As of Monday, Toyota has recalled 2.3 million cars in the United States and 1.9 million in China and Europe.
The problem was a device that intentionally increased friction in the gas pedal so that drivers could better feel the accelerator. This caused the gas pedal to stick to the floor. Toyota said that to fix the problem a steel reinforcing bar that would reduce the friction can be installed.
Auto-dealers would receive training and instruction by mid-week on how to install the steel bar and fix the sticky pedals. The fix should only take 30 minutes.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved the plan. The government has not yet finished its evaluation.
Toyota said production of the vehicles could resume as early as this Monday, February 8.
