What Type of Dress Goes With Peep-Toe Shoes?

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Peep-toe shoes are on the runways, in fashion magazines and in all the stores, and they have been fashionable for a number of seasons. While sometimes we match the shoes to the dress, with the amazing variety of peep-toe shoes out there now, some of us are shopping for a dress to go with our shoes. The right dress for your peep-toe shoes depends on the shoe. There are casual, flat peep toes and formal, elegant ones. Choose the right dress for your shoes for a put-together, stylish and playful look.

Peep-Toe Flats

Wear short dresses with peep-toe flats. Trapeze-style and A-line dresses–worn with or without leggings–work very well with a peep-toe flat. Try contrasting the color of your dress to your shoe for a modern edge. Today’s soft, loose knit dresses work very well with a patent or metallic peep-toe flat. If you have a favorite simple, casual short-sleeved shirt dress, this can also be great with a peep-toe flat for a running-around-town look.

Peep Toes at Work

If you want to wear peep-toe shoes to work as part of your office attire, wear a pair of modest and lower-heeled peep toes with a suit or work-appropriate dress. Wear your peep-toe pumps with a sleek sheath dress and jacket, a tailored dress in a wool crepe or similar fabric, or a simple print skirt, fitted sweater and blazer. This is an ideal time to break out a classic 1960s style shift and coordinating jacket, especially if you work in a field that does not expect traditional matched suits. Choose a classic black dress to take your peep-toe pumps from day into evening. Look for structured and tailored dresses to wear with your peep-toe shoes in the office.

Playing in Peep-Toe Shoes

Wear your sexier peep-toe shoes with a pencil-cut retro wiggle dress or a full-skirted black cocktail dress for a great evening look. Combine black patent peep-toe shoes with a dress of any color, or contrast your bright peep-toe heels with a great neutral dress. Try a navy dress with turquoise peep toes or a gray or black dress with a pair of vivid yellow peep-toes. Pair a sexy pair of peep-toed shoes with a classic fitted shift dress and bold jewelry for an ideal cocktail look. Pick a print that coordinates with a pair of bright peep toes in a halter sundress to be ready for a night out, an afternoon wedding or a summer garden party.

Formal Peep Toes

Wear satin, beaded or embellished peep-toe shoes with a long formal gown or a retro-style tea-length formal. Look for a fitted, long satin dress to make the most of an amazing pair of shoes, or go short to show them off. You can even opt to wear your wedding dress with a stunning pair of peep toes, showing off a pedicure in your wedding colors. Keep in mind that a full-skirted ball gown may hide your peep-toe shoes entirely. Choose a bright color to go with black peep-toe shoes, or wear any color dress with metallic peep toes. If your shoes are quite sparkly, look for a simpler dress to make the most of your stunning peep-toe shoes and perfect pedicure.

Considerations

There are some drawbacks when pairing peep toes and dresses. In warmer weather, bare legs are essential. Be sure to choose a dress that covers enough leg for you to be comfortable since pantyhose are out when you are wearing peep toes. A low-cut dress and peep-toe shoes may be too much for the office or a wedding, but the same shoes when paired with a higher-cut dress can work very well in these situations. Take the time to look at your dress and shoes together in a full-length mirror, and make sure that the heel height, color, style and overall appearance work well together.
