How to Clean Exercise Mats

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

You’ve started your exercise routine and are getting pretty good at sticking to a schedule. Now you notice that the more you work out, the more your exercise mat seems to get a bit grubbier. Common sense tells you that it’s collecting dust and perspiration, since it lies on the floor and you work out on it. But how do you clean an exercise mat? You should clean your mat on a regular basis to maintain its effectiveness and keep it free of germs and bacteria.

Step 1

Spray your exercise mat with a household disinfectant spray. Let the spray set for 5 minutes and then wipe the mat with a terry cloth. Turn the mat over and spray the other side, allowing the mat to air dry over a chair or shower rod.

Step 2

Dissolve scuff marks and spots of grime by dipping a washcloth in a solution of 5 drops dish soap to 1 quart of hot water. Scrub the spots gently until the mark is gone; rinse it well and hang it to dry.

Step 3

Rejuvenate a well soiled mat by giving it a bath in the tub. Add a small squirt of dish soap to 3 inches of warm water and clean your exercise mat one section at a time with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse well, blot dry with a towel and then hang to dry thoroughly.

Step 4

Wipe down your mat after each exercise session, using a disposable antibacterial wipe. Air dry it for a few minutes before rolling the mat for storage.

Warnings

  • Never roll up a damp exercise mat as this will trap moisture and allow mildew to grow.
  • Always follow manufacturer’s directions on cleaning.
