How Do Commercial Weight Loss Diets Compare?

July 27, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Choosing a diet plan that suits your needs can be confusing and stressful. Each plan comes with its own benefits and issues. One of the easiest ways to choose the plan that is right for you is to compare several of the most popular commercial plans and decide which one feels best.

South Beach

South Beach is designed to be easy to use anywhere. It is divided into three different phases, with the first phase being the most restrictive. The diet itself was a pioneer in the low glycemic concept. Phase I removes all carbohydrates and sugars for two weeks. You then move into Phase II, where you can introduce a limited number of carbohydrates, including sweet potatoes. You stay on this phase until you drop all the weight you want to drop. Phase III is for maintenance. The premise of the diet is to allow you to eat and enjoy life in all settings. The diet has a book that can be found in most bookstores. The diet also has several recipe books available. The basic premise of the plan is to cut out white food and white sugar, eat small meals throughout the day and adjust restaurant choices to meet the diet’s requirements.

Flat Belly Diet

The Flat Belly diet also has an induction plan however. It lasts for four days of eating strictly prescribed foods. Following the four-day regime, you then move into a 30 day phase in which you are advised to eat 1,600 calories a day. The day is divided into three meals and one or two snacks. It is recommended that each meal contain approximately 400 calories. The Flat Belly diet also suggests that you choose foods that are nutritionally sensible.

Nutrisystem

Nutrisystem is a diet that is completely handled online. It is also one of the few commercial diets that offers complete meal plans for purchase by participants. While South Beach has a variety of snack foods and entrees that can be purchased at the grocery store, it is founded on the belief that you can eat everyday foods and still follow the plan. With Nutrisystem, you choose your meal plans, and prepackaged meals and snacks are delivered to your door. The company offers vegetarian and diabetic plans as well as regular plans. You simply add vegetables and fruits to the frozen entrees, and you will have a balanced diet.
