Nicole Kidman Speaks out on Violence Against Women

Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon aren’t the only celebumoms shining a spotlight onto global and women’s issues. Nicole Kidman, mom of two with one on the way, said in a press conference at the United Nations this week that she is driven to ending violence against women everywhere in the world.

“Obviously, I’m emotionally connected to this,” Nicole said. “I’m a mother. I have a child on the way. A lot of it is realizing the things that are wrong and [asking myself] how can I contribute to help my children have a better life?”

Nicole has been a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women since 2006 and she spoke passionately about the need to raise awareness to stop violence against women everywhere. In fact, she calls the issue the “most widespread human rights violation of our time.” She said that despite various laws passed to protect women, still “one in three will encounter violence in some way, shape or form against them in their lifetime.” Nicole added, “That’s an extraordinary statistic. Yet do we ever hear it?”
