How to Curl Kids’ Hair

Children want their hair curled for many different reasons. They may have decided they want a different look for a day. They could need it curled to dress for a part they got in a school play. They may be in a backyard club in which all members must have curly hair on Fridays. Whatever reason your child has for wanting curly hair, when she comes to you and needs it done, you can smile with confidence and take care of it.

Pin Curls

Step 1

Comb the hair. If the hair is tangled, it will be more difficult to put the bobby pins or sponge rollers in. Combing the hair through will get it ready to receive the curling method.

Step 2

Part the hair using a comb. The part should be down the middle so that you have the same amount of hair to work with on each side of the part.

Step 3

Choose small- or medium-sized curls. The size of the desired curl dictates how small to section the hair. Before you get started, you must know what size curl you are trying to achieve. If you want medium-sized curls, you will section the hair in 1-inch widths around the head. This is done in a downward motion. Start from the part, using the comb. Bring it down through the hair to separate a single 1-inch section from the rest of the hair. For smaller curls, make the sections 1/4-inch each.

Step 4

Spray the section with water. A water bottle works best, but if you do not have a water bottle, you can dip the comb into a glass of water, and run it through the section to get it damp.

Step 5

Place an index finger against the section where it meets the head. Using your other hand, wrap the hair around and around the index finger near the head. Visualize a roll of wrapping paper. The index finger is similar to the cardboard tubing, and the hair is the gift wrap. Wrap the hair in a clockwise motion around the index finger until it is all wrapped up.

Step 6

Remove your index finger carefully. Leave the rolled hair in place with the hand. Take a bobby pin and secure the hair to the head, being careful not to let it unravel. Once the hair is dry, take out the bobby pins and comb out the curls.

Sponge Rollers

Step 1

Comb the kid’s hair so that it is free of tangles.

Step 2

Part the hair down the middle, and let it lay loosely around the shoulders.

Step 3

Use a comb to divide the hair into 1-inch sections.

Step 4

Grasp the first section with your hand, and spray the section with water to get it damp.

Step 5

Place the sponge roller, with its clip in the open position at the bottom of the section.

Step 6

Roll the sponge toward the head, being sure to roll hair neatly around the sponge until the sponge roller touches the head. Snap the clip in place to secure the roller.

Step 7

Repeat until all the sections are rolled. Place a scarf around the kid’s head to further secure sponge rollers until the hair can dry.

Step 8

Unsnap the roller clip and unroll the sponge roller carefully. Once all sections have been unrolled, use your fingers or a wide-toothed comb to shake out and style curls loosely.
