The Best Makeup for Women Over 50

December 10, 2010 by ds_11119 Leave a Comment

Skin changes over time, and your makeup routine must change with it. You may find that your foundation settles into fine lines around your eyes or on your forehead, or that eyeshadow settles into the lines on your eyelids, making them more prominent. The right products and application techniques can help you look rested, refreshed and even younger than your years.

Types

The makeup products you use need to change with age. Opt for richer and more hydrating products, like cream foundations and blushes to retain the dewy appearance of younger skin. Use a primer under your foundation or on its own for a more polished appearance. You may find that a sheerer formula or a tinted moisturizer works better than heavier coverage products on your aging skin.

Function

Moisturize your skin before applying makeup. Apply a thin layer of primer, then use a foundation brush to smooth liquid or cream foundation over your face. Opt for a color one-half shade lighter than your skin tone, recommends WebMD.com. Apply blush high on the apples of your cheeks, and use highlighter shades on the top of the cheekbones or brow bone to emphasize your facial structure, rather than darker contouring tones in the hollows of your face.

Considerations

Go lighter with makeup as you age, both in texture and color. Warmer, natural colors can brighten faded, sallow skin. If your hair color has lightened or you’ve gone gray, adjust the colors you choose accordingly. Choose softer, neutral colors for your eyes and lips, and apply with modern techniques. Try a single light shade from lid to brow bone; dab a bit of gloss on your lower lip to plump your lips gently.

Features

Some cosmetic lines offer anti-aging products that incorporate vitamin- or antioxidant-enriched ingredients or additional moisturizers for your skin. You may find that these products, designed specifically for older skin, produce a dewier and more youthful appearance. Choose foundation or primer with UVA and UVB protection to prevent further sun damage and reduce steps in your skin care routine.

Warning

Makeup choices that looked elegant or dramatic in your youth may just add years now. Red lipstick, heavy black eyeliner, and powdered skin can make you look older and will not allow your natural beauty to shine. Products with a lot of shimmer may emphasize wrinkles, while matte lipsticks can make your lips look thinner. If you’re unsure about makeup and your aging skin, consider a visit to a cosmetics counter and a few makeup lessons.
