So, this was an interesting week for many of my clients. For some reason they were all on the same page emotionally. They either had a rough week, or they were in a rut, or they just wanted to vent. Typically we strategize, set goals and embrace their accomplishments for the week. But it is just as important in life to go with the flow when you are feeling a certain way. Sometimes it is more beneficial to have a “pity party”, get things off your chest so that you can move forward. This was definitely the case for many of my clients. Life throws all of us curveballs at times, but it is how you respond that makes the difference. When you are feeling ina rut, or if something negative happens to you, there is always a silver lining. Even under the worst circumstances, can you walk away stronger or more equipped for the next time something comes your way. If a relationship failed for example, hopefully you can learn exactly what you do not want the next time around. You will be more careful and picky when choosing your next partner. This in the long run benefits you dramatically. Take some time this week to just be in the moment. If you are feeling down, just go with it and let it ride its course. Talk with friends, write in a journal, go for a walk. Just embrace it for what it is.
ACTION TIPS FOR THE WEEK:
1. Have a pity party
When you are feeling down, go ahead and have a pity party for yourself. Get together with some friends or hibernate by yourself. Take this time to let the emotions go. It is important to have an outlet for your feelings, otherwise you will eventually let them get the best of you. It is more constructive to designate a time to wallow as long as you know when the time is up it’s time to move on.
2. Re-examine the positives
After an unfortunate event, take some time to process the positives. What can you take away from the situation? This is when you have a choice to become powerless to the event, or use this as a learning curve to make you stronger in the long run. Again, try to see the silver lining if possible.
3. Move on
Now it is time to move on. It is important to realize thisentire process may take some time. Just know that you are moving in the right direction and making choices to move you past the event. Even if you take one step at a time, one day at a time, you are at least moving forward, not dwelling in the moment. Ask youself “what can I do today to begin the healing”.
