The Wall Street Journal (which, refreshingly for a biz publication, frequently captures the wacky dynamics of modern motherhood) ran a piece last Wednesday chronicling all the ways kids try to outsmart their moms and get onto Facebook and other social media sites that parents have forbidden. I read the article in our kitchen via old-school newsprint while my three kids hovered around me immersed in our familys iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks.

Seeing Ghosts of My Father

Im writing this on October 31, which, in addition to being Halloween, is also the anniversary of the day my father died. Its been two years since my uncle called, with no warning, to tell me that my father was in the ICU in Philadelphia. Two years since I begged a nurse to keep him alive through the night so I could get there in time to say goodbye. Two years since that nurse called me back to tell me that she was sorry, but he just didnt make it.
