This weekend we celebrated the baptism of our newest little god-daughter, Kate Rilee. She wore the dress that my youngest daughter wore at her own baptism, 18 years ago to the day. It was the dress that Kates mother, our dear family nanny, wore at her baptism, about 18 years before that.Standing there looking at my 18 year old daughter holding baby Kate I realized how quickly those years have flown by. The next threshold well be crossing will be college dorm day, coming in just a few short months.

This morning on the Today show the representative for the family of actor Corey Haim, recently deceased from a drug overdose, said something like this, We want to correct a miscommunication about Coreys mother. She was living with him, not the other way around.I thought to myself, yet another case of someone who doesnt want to be perceived as God forbid living with mother as an adult.

As moms, were on very familiar terms with guilt. It keeps us company in the middle of the night, when we let the baby fuss just a little longer so we can stay in our own beds a minute more.It loves riding in the car with us as we take our young ones to the doctor where well hear one of two things: Why did you wait so long to bring her in? or You dont need to bring her in for every little thing kids get bugs all the time.

Dont you just love it when you hear those words, Youre not the boss of me! While we usually think of them in relation to our toddlers or teens, Ive heard them lately from two sources: a middle aged person (to his spouse) and an elder (to their child). Happens to be true, you know. Think about our children, from birth, through the toddler years, to pre-teen and teen. When can we possibly think were the boss of them?
