The Kardashians overtook their old friends, the Hiltons, in the realm of buying fame – for being, well, themselves, they make more than a handful of Hollywood leading men and women put together. Kris Jenner has been the mastermind of the family’s success – is she just wicked-smart, or, is she actually evil?
The Kardashians have made millions in marketing and hit reality TV shows. How did Kris Jenner do it? Not to mention, why did she do it? It’s not like they’ve ever been hurting in funds…
Kris Jenner was once just a lowly flight attendant who wanted to be out in the world and building a family more than she wanted to pursue a career, so to speak. So, when she met high society lawyer Robert Kardashian and started living the good life, things seemed to be pretty much perfect as they were…
…well, until the divorce, that is. Robert and Kris split up in 1989 right around the time the OJ Simpson trial was about to take over media attention. In the same year that Robert died, Kris married Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete, Bruce Jenner. If the rumors about how much money Robert left behind for his family are true, then between inheritance and Bruce Jenner’s fortune, there was already plenty of money in the bank. So, was the drive to make a PR circus out of her own family just out of greed?
Kris started with apply her PR wiles to Bruce Jenner’s new interest in race car driving (long before his interest was to be a woman). Once she got the hang of that, she pitched the reality TV show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and the rest, so they say, is history… Who could have known the show would earn 6 million viewer per episode?
Kris Jenner has made some questionable comments about her family’s success. According to the Daily Mail, she was noted as having said in an interview, “My fantasy is to have ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ Season 26. Who knew it would be this profitable? I should have had more kids.” Did that just raise your eyebrow a bit…?
Whether or not the comment was slightly tasteless, it’s still true. Her kids can just show up to a party and make a ridiculous amount of money. Kim Kardashian makes more than $250K for an appearance. Speaking of Kim…
Rumor has it that the sex tape issue was completely orchestrated by dear old Mother. The tape of Kim with her ex-boyfriend was sold to a porn distributor for about $5 million – that DVD was Vivid’s bestselling product in about a decade. Kris has always played this off as making lemons into lemonade, so to speak.
In response to this situation, Kris said shrugged and thanked the communications expert she hired to help her deal with the potential scandal. She said, “All I knew was that I had to make some lemonade out of these lemons fast. Real fast… My job was trying to take my kids’ 15 minutes and turn it into 30.” Does that sit right with you?
On the one hand, the Kardashians became more popular than ever after the whole incident… on the other, if this were your daughter, would you sell out her private recording of having sex with her boyfriend to be seen by the masses? Would you have taken the opportunity to make money? Or would you invest a little of the bread you already had into reducing the impact?
As the manager of her children’s celebrity careers, Kris earns 10% of whatever they make. That doesn’t sound like a whole lot – unless you’re a Kardashian and have every luxury designer on speed dial. The endorsement deals in place cover products of all sorts from perfume to sneakers to diet pills and toilet paper! For a wealthy family, does that sound cheap to you? And where does it end? What will this “momager” not sell, when it comes to her family, to make more money? Is she brilliant? Or just greedy?
