As a 33-year-old mom to six children, it’s important for me to maintain my energy and my health. One way I do this is keeping a regular workout schedule. Not only does this help me feel good, refreshed, and energized, but it also gives me a chance to get some “me time” in. And, that’s always good for the mind, body, and soul!
One of my favorite ways to exercise is running. I find it exhilarating, refreshing, and actually very energizing. Since I want to maximize the rare alone time I get, I make sure that I’m always prepared before every run.
Safety is key! Your safety is the number one important thing to consider before heading out. Always know your surroundings and always have important first aid items handy. I know that toting a full first aid kit is not convenient. That’s why I use an old smart phone armband, and secure it to my upper arm. In the armband, I make sure to have bandages and antibiotic ointment. The only kinds I will use are BAND-AID® Brand and NEOSPORIN® + Pain Relief Ointment. I am in love with the BAND-AID® Brand WATER BLOCK ™ Clear Bandages. These bandages do a fabulous job of keeping out sweat and dirt! If you happen to get a scrape or cut while you are out running, pour some of your clean drinking water on it to flush it out. Then apply a small amount of NEOSPORIN® + Pain Relief Ointment to the bandage and attach the bandage to cover your wound.
Hydration is important to your safety as well. Always carry water with you, especially if you are running in the heat. I use my water bottles as very light weights to help work out my arms while I am on the run. I alternate the hand in which I am carrying my water every 5-10 strides. By doing this you not only work out your arms, but you also stay hydrated.
Another very important thing to consider before you hit the pavement are your shoes. Did you know that experts advise avid runners to change their running shoes every 300 to 500 miles? That means if you run around 2 miles a day, you will need to purchase new shoes every 6 months. There are so many choices when buying running shoes but remember, comfort and fit are the most important. You want to make sure the shoes aren’t rubbing your heel or the side of the big or little toe. The toe of your running shoes should be wide, allowing your toes to comfortably spread out as you come down on the ball of your foot. But even with the best shoes, sometimes you get a blister. But don’t let that blister stop you from exercising – BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages Blister GEL GUARD is a great buffer between the heel and the shoe causing the problem. It is cushioned for comfort!
A healthy body is a must and running in your neighborhood is an inexpensive way to relieve stress from a full day! It’s also something fun you can do with your children. My children love racing me down the street. And, I hate to admit it, but they usually win! I’m the one left behind in their dust, laughing hysterically. I guess I need more practice. So darn, more ‘me time’ it is!
