How to Get Wrinkles Out of Tulle

March 10, 2017 by ModernMom Staff

Tulle is one of those fabrics that everyone loves because it adds such flair to formal attire. After all, those ballerina tutus would never stick out in quite the same way with any other fabric, and layers of tulle beneath a bridal gown are essential for creating that lovely fullness that makes every bride feels like a princess on her special day. The downside to tulle is that the same properties that give it that stiffness also make it one of the most finicky fabrics to deal with because it is prone to wrinkles. Fortunately, you can get those wrinkles out by understanding how to turn steam into your best weapon against crinkly tulle.

Use A Steam Machine
This is one method professional seamstresses use when they find a wrinkle in their beautiful rolls of tulle. Start by hanging your garment on the special pole that comes with your steamer. If yours did not come with a hanging pole included with your machine, then find another place to hang your garment that will give you enough access to steam the wrinkles without laying it down. For example, a closet or dressing room door is a perfect spot to get to work. Next, pour water into the steamer, and allow it to heat up for about five minutes. Once steam begins to flow from your appliance, use the nozzle to direct it toward the wrinkles on your garment.

Spin It In Your Dryer
Always check your garment’s label before trying this tip if it has delicate layers of fabric such as wool included with the tulle. However, it is also one of the simplest tricks for removing wrinkles because you just put your garment in the dryer. Begin by setting your dryer to the lowest setting, and let it warm up for three to five minutes. While your dryer is getting up to temp, lightly spray your garment with water. Then, put it in the dryer for five minutes. Avoid leaving it in longer because too much drying could harm the delicate fabrics. Once you take your garment out of the dryer, hang it up. The wrinkles will gradually disappear as the fabric cools.

Iron It Smooth
It is possible to turn your regular iron into a steamer in a pinch. Simply fill up your iron’s water reservoir and set it to the steam setting. Once it warms up, hold the iron close to the fabric without actually touching it. Then, slowly glide it over the wrinkled areas while being careful to avoid making contact with the hot plate and tulle. You should see the wrinkles disappear slowly just like you would with a regular steamer.

Knowing how to get wrinkles out of tulle is important for always looking your best. Now that you have that smooth, perfect fabric, keep it in top condition by handing your garment when it is not being worn. If you must transport it, use a special traveling bag that protects it from being crinkled by pressure from other materials. When you do use heat from a dryer, always keep it at a low setting, and remember that steam is really all you need to smooth out any unsightly wrinkles.
