Prevent your baby from getting the baby blues by using skin care products that are suitable for her skin. Harsh chemicals present in some soaps, lotions and ointments do not only irritate your baby’s skin, but they may also cause skin allergies. Use only the best for your baby to ensure your baby’s comfort and your peace of mind.
Best Lotions and Moisturizers
According to the Cosmetics Database website, an online shopping guide to safe cosmetics operated by the Environmental Working Group, the best picks from all brands when it comes to skin care products are those made with organic ingredients. Topping the lists for all name brands, showing an average of 0 hazard score (based on 0 to 10), are: AromaBaby Natural Baby Lotion, Baby Bear Shop Cheeky Baby Butter, Badger Healing Balm, Cosmic Tree Essentials Simply Shea and Tamanu Cream for Baby and Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Skin Ointment.
For non-organic products, topping the list is Aveeno Daily Baby Moisturizing Lotion, which showed a hazard score of 2. Cosmetics Cop and Consumer Search websites both agree that among non-organic products Aveeno is, by far, the best for babies.
What makes these products ideal for baby skin is the absence of DMDM (dimethyl dimethyl) hydantoin, which can cause skin irritations and allergies and contains cancer-causing chemicals. These products do not have fragrance that can contain neurotoxic and hormone-disrupting chemicals. They also do not have ceteareth and PEG (polyethylene glycol) compounds, which are petrochemicals that contain cancerous impurities.
Best Diaper Creams
Just like with lotions and moisturizers, the best diaper creams are fragrant-free. In addition, they are also devoid of BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), boric acid and sodium borate. Tackle your baby’s bottom with diaper creams that do not have those ingredients. BHA can cause skin depigmentation, which is why some countries ban products that contain them.
Topping the organic diaper cream products, in alphabetical order, are AromaBaby Barrier Balm, Baby Cakes Rear Repair & Over There Ointment and Badger Diaper Cream. These three products rated a hazard score of 0 each. For non-organic, Aquaphor Hydrophor Baby Diaper Rash Ointment and Triple Paste Medicated Ointment for Diaper Rash each had a hazard score rating of 1.
Of all the organic sunscreens, only Keys Soap Solar RX Therapeutic Sunblock, SPF 30 received a hazard score of 0. It contains zinc oxide as its active ingredient, which is excellent in UV protection.
For non-organic sunscreens, the top three picks had a hazard score of 3 each. They are Blue Lizard Australian Suncream, SPF 30, Sensitive, California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion No Fragrance and Coppertone Endless Summer Ultrasheer Sunscreen Stick. Unfortunately, these three show some traces of ingredients one must avoid, such as parabens and PEG compounds.
Fortunately, the best picks do not have ingredients found on other products that contain allergens and cancer-causing ingredients such as oxybenzone, DMDM hydantoin and triethanolamine.
