Autism and Stimming

People with autism often stim. Stimming is short for self-stimulatory behavior. It’s also known as stereotypical behavior or stereotypy.

But, what is it?

Typical people engage in stimming all the time, but why is it so common for people with autism to engage in stimming?

And, should parents of a child with autism allow stimming behaviors? Are all stims bad?
