Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Strug is a Mom!

Do you remember Kerri Strug’s courageous final vault in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta?

The gymnast stuck the landing despite an injured ankle to clinch the gold medal for Team USA (also known as the Magnificent Seven).

But now the 34-year-old Olympic gold medalist has a new title – Mom!

Strug and her husband, attorney Robert Fischer III, welcomed their first child on March 1. The little boy – named Tyler William Fischer – weighed in at 7lbs, 1 oz.

“For me, he was large!” joked Strug, who is 4’10”.

As for how she’s finding motherhood so far?

“Everyone tells you, ‘When you have a child, you’ll understand,’” she told PEOPLE.

“It’s kind of like my gymnastics training when people said, ‘Dreams do come true, anything’s possible.’ You hear these things and you really want to believe them, but you don’t quite get it until you go through it.”

“And it’s the same with Tyler.  I understand it now, the immediate love.”

Congrats to the happy family!
