How to Plan a Baby Boy’s First Birthday Party

Reaching that one-year mark is a big event for mom and dad. But for your baby boy, it’s just another day. Since your baby will not appreciate this major milestone, much of the party planning can revolve around what you want for your baby boy’s first birthday party. Keep your baby boy’s temperament in mind for the big day; otherwise, enjoy planning the details to create the party that you envision.

Step 1

Determine who and how many people you want to invite to the party. Typically, guests at first birthday parties are close family and friends of the parents since your baby has yet to develop his own friendships. Although your baby boy will be most comfortable surrounded by people he knows, rather than strangers he may have met once as a newborn.

Step 2

Pick a location for the party that has enough space for everyone. For a party with mostly adults, having the party at home often works best. There, the baby can take a nap in his own bed when he’s tired. If many young cousins and other kids will be at the party, you may want to choose a kid-friendly place for the party.

Step 3

Select a theme for the party that expresses an interest that you or your baby boy have. Popular themes for boys include puppies, cars, sports and bugs. At this age, your baby may have a book character or favorite family pet you can use for a theme, or you can pick one that you like since he really won’t have much of an opinion.

Step 4

Plan the party time around your baby’s regular nap schedule. At this age, he is most likely still taking a morning and an afternoon nap. First-birthday parties can be overwhelming for baby, so make sure he is well-rested.

Step 5

Keep it simple and short. One-year-olds usually tire quickly at parties and may even find the whole event just too much. Plan a party that lasts two hours or less. Don’t feel you need to plan constant (or any) activities or games. Food, gifts, cake and family are all that you need.
