Apples, Trees & IKEA

The crisp October air makes us crave apples, which are delicious this time of year. We wanted to try something new so Momma Reiner whipped up this tasty Apple Galette.

Crust:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon granulated sugar

Scant 1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 stick (4 oz.) frozen, or very firm and cold, unsalted butter

3 tablespoons ice cold water

Filling:

2 lbs. tart cooking apples (such as Granny Smith or Pippin)

2-3 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

            Preheat oven to 400°F.

For the crust: Combine the first four ingredients in the bowl of a food processor.  With the processor running, gradually add the cold water just until the mixture holds together.  Try to do this as quickly as possible so that the butter doesn’t melt or get too soft. The more you handle the dough (or process it), the warmer it becomes and the more the butter softens.  The cooler you keep it, the flakier the pastry will be.  On a well-floured board, press the dough into a ball and roll it out to a 15” diameter circle.  Gently transfer the rolled dough onto a baking sheet (a pizza stone is a really good size for this tart).

For the filling: Quarter, core and peel the apples.  Next, thinly slice the apples by hand or in the processor.

Place the apples in concentric circles over the pastry, leaving a 2” border uncovered … Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon (if elected) and dot with butter.

Fold the uncovered edge of the pastry over the apples, pleating it to make it fit.  Sprinkle the exposed edge of the pastry with another tablespoon of sugar.

Bake in the upper third of the oven for 45 minutes or until the apples are tender and caramelized, and the crust is a lovely golden brown.  Slide the galette off the stone (with the aid of a spatula) onto a rack to cool slightly.  Serve warm with ice cream, whipped cream or crème fraîche.

SASS IT UP: If you are feeling especially decadent, mix the apples with some raspberries, blackberries, pitted cherries, sliced pears or rum-soaked raisins before you fill the tart shell.

To make your job easier when baking apple treats, IKEA offers these really cute apple coring/slicing gizmos.

And if you want to carry through the theme to your table, check out their adorable tree placemats.

In fact, as we recently discovered, IKEA offers an entire line of bakeware and helpful kitchen utensils at affordable prices so if you haven’t been to the store since you were last picking out furniture it’s definitely worth a trip back.

IKEA stores nationwide gave out seedlings to customers on October 16th. IKEA Carson gave customers and co-workers seedlings to support the California Environment. Additionally IKEA Carson is donating 5 trees to the new Environmental Charter Middle School in Inglewood and we will be at ECMS on October 23rd to help them plant their new trees. The seedlings kick off a partnership with IKEA and American Forest where, upon checkout, IKEA customers in America will be asked to donate $1.00 to American Forests to plant a tree the U.S. And you know we’re suckers for good causes!

While we’re on the subject of IKEA, if you happen to be in the Greater Los Angeles area, IKEA Carson is excited to invite the local community to their store to do some Halloween trick-or-treating in a safe environment 6pm-9pm October 31st.
