Five Online Shopping Safety Tips

If you’re like me, you’ll probably buy at least one or two gifts online during the holiday season.

Why? Because it’s easy, quick and you can do it in your PJs with a cup of tea. I know lots of moms who are only doing online shopping this year.

And while online shopping is a better experience than it used to be, you still need to be diligent and be aware of a few things, especially when it comes to security.

Here are five things to be aware of when doing your shopping online. I’ve pulled the information below from an anti-virus software company called Avast with my comments peppered throughout. (Full disclosure: I wasn’t approached by them.) With security, it’s always best to get your advice from the experts.

1. Use sites you are already comfortable with.

I’m a creature of habit. I typically shop at Amazon, LLBean and a couple of other websites. I do so because I believe (rightly or wrongly) that my purchases are more secure. I’ll try different online stores but if I do, I scrutinize them a lot more than my usual favorites.

2. Make sure the site is secure with shttp or https when you are making your purchases.

You will find these letters in your browser’s address bar. These letters that your purchases are secure. BTW – Doesn’t shttp look like a potty word?! 🙂

3. Never assume.

Read the fine print including shipping, warranty and return policies to make sure you understand what happens if you don’t like the product you order online. You don’t want to be caught off guard.

4. Keep a paper trail.

After every online purchase I copy the information and save it into a separate document, for example, LLBean boys’ purchase. Yes, it may seem redundant but you never know. I want my own paper trail, just in case.

5. Check your statements.

Make sure that what you ordered is what you’ve paid for and if not rectify the situation right away.

These are just a few tips to help you safely navigate your online shopping experience during the holiday season. I would love to know if you do anything differently. Please email me at weeboot@gmail.com or tweet me @weebootMom.

The Family Holiday Dinner Survival Guide

We just survived a holiday with my in-laws, and when I say in-laws I dont just mean Daddy-os parents – I mean ALL of the in-laws. At the top of the family pecking order is the grand matriarch, Oma. She has five grown kids, one of whom is Daddy-o. The total headcount for this communal holiday was: 1 Oma, 10 adults, and 17 grandchildren under the age of 13 years old.
