Good Dress Styles for Heavy Women
Women come in all shapes and sizes. Fortunately, so do dress styles. Choose a dress style based on where you carry your weight. If you have larger hips, you'll want a dress that draws attention to your chest, shoulders and face instead. If you carry your weight around your stomach, look for a dress with a high waist or low neck line to draw attention away from your belly.

Good Dress Styles for Heavy Women

Women come in all shapes and sizes. Fortunately, so do dress styles. Choose a dress style based on where you carry your weight. If you have larger hips, you’ll want a dress that draws attention to your chest, shoulders and face instead. If you carry your weight around your stomach, look for a dress with a high waist or low neck line to draw attention away from your belly.

Wrap Up in a Wrap Dress

The wrap dress, given new life by designer Diane von Furstenberg in the 1970s, is flattering for most body types and looks especially good on heavy women. Wrap dresses typically feature a V-neck, which draws attention to your bust and away from a larger tummy or hips. The dress usually ties at the waist, which can make a wider waist look narrower.

Straighten Up in a Sheath Dress

Hide a large belly by wearing a sheath dress, which is cut straight from the shoulder to the knee. A properly fitting sheath dress will drape nicely across your heavy body and won’t cling to any curves. A sheath with a flattering V-neck or scoop neckline will draw attention to your bust and away from your stomach and hips. If you have nice calves, a dress that hits just above or just below the knee is a great way to show them off.

Empire-Waist Dresses

The waist on the empire waist dress is just below the bust. This dress style is great, if you have wider hips or a wider midsection. Attention is drawn away from both the stomach and hips and toward the bust and shoulders. If you are apple shaped, meaning your stomach and waist are wide, then wearing an empire waist dress will smooth and straighten your appearance. If you have a pear shape, meaning your hips are bigger than your waist and bust, an empire waist dress with an A-line skirt will help hide your hips.
