Just Another Mom’s Thoughts on Fifty Shades of Grey

Some call it liberating, fascinating, empowering, sexy, and intriguing. Others call it disgusting, mommy porn, abusive, and embarrassing. But let us just call it what it is…a phenomenon…the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon. Women around the world, and some men too, are excitedly awaiting the world wide premier of this highly anticipated movie. Unlike in the beginning, when moms across the globe picked up their first copy of the book and hid it under the toilet paper in the shopping cart, the whispers are no longer quiet. Women are openly discussing red rooms, whips and ties and the captivating love story between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. While others are appalled that these so called, mothers, teachers, professionals and gasp…Christian women actually read and enjoyed such smut.

I cringe every time I see another “Why I Don’t Like 50″ post filter onto my screen. You may be wondering why. Well, because I know that I am going to click on it, read it and then end up angry. Angry because most of the posts I have read are written by self proclaimed Christian women. I use the words self proclaimed because, a person can call themselves whatever they want with their mouth, but if their actions do not justify their words, nobody will take them seriously. I am a Christian, I have a close relationship with God and I try and follow his lead in everything I do. I have read and enjoyed the entire Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. I will be going to see the movie, with my husband and with a large group of couples that I actually go to church with. Does this make us bad? Does this mean that we are fake? Does this mean that we aren’t really Christian? Does this mean God is mad at us? Ummmm……NO!

Let me tell you what this means. We are honest; we do not judge others for their taste in books, music, clothes, lifestyle, etc. We choose to find the good in things instead of constantly looking for the bad. We choose to love others in spite of their personal preferences. We choose to lead people to God, not push them away.

Now that I have cleared that up, here is my take on the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon. While others may see porn, lust, abuse, distaste, and adultery among many other things I’ve read, I see a love story. I see a man overcoming his horrific past that is littered with control, abuse, and promiscuity because he has found a woman who helps him to see his worth in this life. I see a woman that will not let fear and the opinions of others get in her way of true love and happiness. I see a couple grow and develop over a short time and learn to rely and depend on each other. I see a man and woman who love each other in spite of their flawed insecurities and who make each other feel beautiful, inside and out.

To sum it up….it’s a fictional book. If you are one of the many that do not like this book and want to voice your opinion, that’s okay by me. I can respect your choice, but leave the character of those that do like it, out of it. Luke 6:37 “Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;” Now…if you are one of the many that do like this book, hold onto your furry handcuffs chicas the wait for the movie is almost over!!!!!!!!!!!
