Summer Lips: Find Your Best Shade

When choosing lip colors for summer, bright and vibrant colors are the way to go. The types of colors to choose are bright pastels and hot hues similar to those seen in the tropics. Fruit colors are excellent choices, from the red berries to papaya colors. When applying bright lip colors, always remember that they tend to emphasize dry patches. To avoid this, scrub away the dry skin on lips, and then apply moisturizer before applying lipstick. Apply lipstick to the bottom lip, press lips together and use your fingertips to distribute the color so that it will not appear heavy-handed. Apply a matching lip pencil color to finish off the look.

Bright Pink

Bright Pink

Just like the color of pink flamingos, bright pink exudes warmth and vibrancy. Choose bright, bubble-gum shades if you have a lighter complexion with a pink undertone. Choose magenta if you have a darker skin tone. When choosing pink lip color, avoid the frosted or shimmery kinds so that your lips would not look too heavy. Dab it instead of smearing it all around your lips, for a more naturally stained look.

Purple

Purple

Purple lipsticks look good on women who have bright red hair and a light skin complexion. Those with light skin tones should wear softer shades of lavender and mauve. Those with darker skin tones can opt for violet and orchid hues. There are purple lipsticks mixed with platinum, silver or gold sparkles, which make them easier to wear. Avoid the frosted formulas so that it would not look heavy and too thick.

Coral

Coral

Nothing gives a tropical feeling more than the color coral. It looks beautiful on bronzed and olive skins. For lighter skin tones, choose a peach tone or lighter melon shade. Women with blond hair and fairer complexions can also go for a softer apricot lipstick and lip gloss. Avoid deep orange hues when choosing coral. A bright papaya lip color would look good topped with a pale pink lip gloss to mute the tone.

Red

Red

Red is a classic lip color choice and can work well especially during a dinner date. It is dramatic and can be a showstopper when worn against the classic little black dress. During the day, choose cherry-red lipstick if you have pale lips. For those with dark lips, choose a brown-red shade. Use sheer red if you prefer a more vivid tone that is not too overwhelming. However, if you are into a more vibrant mood, wear a colorful sundress with matching fire-engine-red lipstick. If you do decide to go red, go easy on the eyes – just do a hint of mascara but skip the eye-shadow: too hooker-ish.
