Summer Sugar Expedition: Homeward Bound

You know you are a Sugar Momma when…you take your seven year old on a road trip through the South in search of Sugar nirvana. After eating our way through Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, we decided it was time to head home. On the way, we detoured, took a new route, and hit some highlights.

We pulled off the road in Waco, Texas to snack at Health Camp Diner. We had the perfect American meal of hamburger, fries, and a shake. Famous for shakes, this joint is a proud sponsor of BYOB (bring your own banana). Although there were so many flavors to choose from, we sampled the strawberry and vanilla. Smooth, ice cold, and malty, both did not disappoint.

Next we travelled to Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country. We bee-lined to Rather Sweet Bakery & Café and were lucky enough to meet the (self described) Pastry Queen, Rebecca Rather. How could we resist the Banana Cream Meringue Tart?

Once we digested, we went around the corner to The Pie Company where their slogan reads, “pie fixes everything.”  Clearly, we agree.

We took some pie to sample to the ranch where we stayed.  After playing amongst the cows, donkeys, horses, pigs, roosters, and other animals, we ventured out onto the main road and pulled over at the Studebaker Farm peach stand.

We got ourselves a bushel and went back to make our very own peach cobbler! Honestly, with those just picked peaches, it was the best cobbler yet.

On the way to the airport, we made a final stop in Austin. Snow Beach is a trailer selling shaved ice. This may have been the highlight for the younger set.  I have to admit, the reinvented snow cone was surprisingly delicious! Shaved ice has certainly evolved.  I selected pink grapefruit. My son chose strawberry daiquiri-orange-bubblegum flavors with cream splashed on top.

What an experience Junior and I had seeing the South through sugar encrusted glasses.  My son and I were exposed to new cultures, people, foods, and new sugar ideology. “What’s next?” he asked. There’s always another sugar adventure waiting just around the corner….

The Family Holiday Dinner Survival Guide

We just survived a holiday with my in-laws, and when I say in-laws I dont just mean Daddy-os parents – I mean ALL of the in-laws. At the top of the family pecking order is the grand matriarch, Oma. She has five grown kids, one of whom is Daddy-o. The total headcount for this communal holiday was: 1 Oma, 10 adults, and 17 grandchildren under the age of 13 years old.
