Aromatherapy for Labor and Birth Space

August 20, 2015 by lori bregman Leave a Comment

As a Birth doula with a background in healing, one of the healing modalities I use to better support my clients during labor is aromatherapy. Not only can it change the whole energy of the birth space but it also does so much to support the laboring mama. Here are a few of my go-to oils and birth blends I often use.

To bring on and strengthen contractions as well as to help dull labor pain – For this birthday party I use Clary sage, jasmine and myrrh –- Add 6 drops clary sage , 5 drops jasmine and 2 drops myrrh to 2 tablespoons oil base ( I use unscented organic coconut oil ) massage on lower belly , lower back , hips and ankles.

To help soften and relax the pelvis – Add 5 drops of rose oil to a bath or birthing tub to help soften and relax the ligaments of the pelvis.

For nausea -Add 3 drops peppermint and 2 drops of lemon oil on a towel, cotton ball or wash cloth and sniff often to help combat nausea.

To uplift the spirit and help promote relaxation – Good vibes are always welcome and needed in the birth space . In an aromatherapy diffuser, add to a base of water – 3 drops of Geranium , 6 drops of lavender and 5 drops of bergamot

To melt away tension –When you can relax your body and let go you will be in turn helping your baby who is working super hard to make his way out into the world and into your arms . Use 7 drops of lavender, 5 drops of neroli and 10 drops of magnesium oil to 2 tablespoons of oil base or unscented coconut oil. Massage shoulders , neck , back , legs and feet .

For energy and focus – This is a fabulous pick me up if you start getting tired and losing focus. Place 2 drops of eucalyptus, 3 drops peppermint oil and 2 drops of tangerine oil in your hands rub together and take a whiff. For an extra energy boost you can also apply this blend to a cold wash cloth and hang around the back of your neck.

To relax the mind – Nothing better than great head massage to still the mind. Add 6 drops of sandalwood and 2 drops of neroli in hand and massage into scalp .

For diffusing the air from germs (great for hospitals) – Lots of my clients are freaked out about germs in the hospital so I always carry a bottle of thieves oil from young living oils in my bag. In a 2 oz spray bottle add 15-20 drops of thieves oil (young living ) to 2 oz of water .. Spray around the room and wipe down anything you wish to be free of germs. You can also diffuse in diffuser.

Foot rejuvenation rub – This will make you want to get up and dance your baby out. Take 1 tablespoon of unscented coconut oil blended with 3 drops grapefruit oil and 4 drops peppermint oil.
