Why Do Polarizing Filters Make Good Lenses for Sunglasses?

When choosing a pair of sunglasses, you want more than just style. You want protection. You should also look for helpful lens coatings, like polarizing filters. The polarizing filters are a good choice for most people, whether you like to play sports, spend time on the lake or just walk around town.

Prevention of Glare During Sports

If you like to play sports, polarized filters on your sunglasses are a must. When light bounces off shiny surfaces like snow, it becomes concentrated. Known as glare, this concentrated sunlight can temporarily blind you, which can be dangerous when doing most types of sports. A polarizing filter reflects this type of light and makes it easier to see.

Increased Visibility While Driving

Glare commonly occurs during driving, thanks to an abundance of shiny metal and smooth concrete. Since a moment of inattention can lead to a wreck, it only makes sense to choose polarizing sunglasses to wear while driving.

Protection for Sensitive Eyes

Since polarizing filters prevent concentrated patches of light from reaching the eye, they are ideal for eyes that are sensitive to light because of recent surgeries or normal sensitivity.

Better Visibility on the Water

Water is a highly reflective surface, making it one of the most likely locations for glare that can be eased with polarizing filters. Water glare can be predominantly dangerous while using watercrafts, such as speedboats, jet skis and hydro boats, because of the potential for crashes at high speeds. Polarized lenses are are particularly important in this environment. Fishermen are also subjected to prolonged exposure to water glare. Without polarized glasses, an angler may miss the catch of the day, too, since polarizing filters on lenses make the water appear more transparent, making it easier to see fish below the water.

Easier Landscape Shots

While photographing landscapes, most photographers will use a polarizing lens on their camera to make the colors in the photograph more vivid or to get rid of unwanted reflections of light on the camera lens. Unfortunately, if the camera does not have an LCD screen, it is difficult for the photographer to envision exactly what the photo will look like using the filter. An easy fix to this situation is for the photographer to wear sunglasses with a polarizing filter. This enables the photographer to see exactly what the camera is seeing. When caught without a polarizing filter, some photographers will even place a polarizing sunglasses lens in front of the camera lens to get the same effect as a professional lens filter.
