Home Remedies for Wrinkles on Skin

April 30, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, even domestic life can contribute to those wrinkles settling into the skin. Families, careers, friendships and hobbies come to a head in the home, leading to wrinkles from laugh lines to furrowed brows. Since your home has contributed to those deepening lines, use your home’s resources to alleviate and prevent them.

Exfoliate

If you want a youthful glow and tighter, moister skin, you have to remove the dead skin cells that are on your skin’s surface. The cells will slough off eventually, but helping them on their way will give your moisturizer access to the fresh skin beneath. Purchase an exfoliant or make one with 1/3 cup sugar or salt and 1/2 cup of a nourishing oil, such as grapeseed or olive oil. Rub this on your skin, concentrating on gently scrubbing the wrinkles, perpendicular to the lines they make. Do not scrub too hard. For a different exfoliant, mash a banana and a 1/2 cup oatmeal and scrub on your skin. In a pinch, use a clean washcloth to wash off the old skin cells. Avoid dirty loofahs or washcloths that might be harboring bacteria.

Moisturize

Your skin needs to stay moist and plump to keep skin from falling into wrinkled recesses. Keep an eye out for a daily moisturizer that has an SPF of 15 and contains alpha hydroxy acids. When you apply your moisturizer, massage the area around the wrinkles, especially around your massage. Use this as a time to stimulate the skin and rub in the moisturizer. Avoid stretching and pulling skin, especially the delicate skin around the eyes. Use essential oils, such as fennel, geranium, palmarosa and chamomile, in your daily regimen. Mash an avocado with these essential oils; apply as a mask. Wash off after 20 minutes. Spritz a water mixture with lemon peel and a Vitamin C tablet onto your face to cool and moisturize on long summer days.

Consume

Eat foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, wine, coffee and tea, or apply these items directly to the skin to prevent new wrinkles once you have dealt with the old ones. Fruits, vegetables and other foods high in Vitamin C and Vitamin E are valuable in fighting free radicals which can contribute to lines on the skin. Above all, watch how you eat and drink. Avoid puckering your lips and sucking through straws or small tops, which can cause wrinkles around the mouth. Favor glasses and cups.
