Cholesterol Reduction Diets

When the doctor says that your cholesterol numbers are too high, it can set an alarm off in your head. Cholesterol has been found to be a precursor to blocked arteries, which can lead to heart disease and death. One of the first things your doctor will tell you is to change your diet to try to get your elevated numbers down, according to the Mayo Clinic. As of 2010, there was not a diet specifically aimed at reducing cholesterol, but there is a combination of tips you can incorporate to your daily food regime that can get the job done.

Eat Nuts

Using nuts in as many recipes as possible can help you reduce your cholesterol numbers through diet. Although nuts are relatively high in calories, they are also filled with healthy, monounsaturated fats that will attack your cholesterol. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts are good choices, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Monounsaturated Oils

Star cooking with olive oil and canola oil, and use them in all salad dressings and other recipes calling for oils. Using these oils in your everyday diet can help reduce your cholesterol. One structured diet that encourages their use is the Mediterranean diet, which the Mayo Clinic says is heart-healthy.

Cut Red Meat

Cut red meat out of your diet as much as possible. When you do eat red meat, choose lean cuts with the fat trimmed away. When preparing the meat, use a broiler to drain excess fat during the cooking process.

Incorporate Oats

Eating oats in all forms will help you reduce your cholesterol, according to the Mayo Clinic. Oatmeal as a snack once or twice a day will move those numbers down. You can also put oatmeal into many casseroles, meat dishes and desserts to increase your daily intake.
