Best Facial Skin Care Products

May 3, 2011 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Every woman should have the basics in her facial skin care arsenal. For most, flawless skin doesn?t just happen. Even those blessed with a perfect complexion have to take care of their skin to keep it that way. It takes the right products and care to have radiant skin. The best products can help improve your skin, while protecting it. Here are four essential skin care products for a flawless face:

1. Sunscreen

If you use only one product in your facial skin care routine, make it sunscreen. Sun exposure causes damage to the skin, especially in the delicate facial areas. The damage includes discoloration, wrinkles, rough or dry skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. When shopping for a sunscreen, look for UVA and UVB protection. The ingredients should include titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Avoid some of the harsher chemicals used, such as avobenzone, that can cause skin irritation, recommends Paula Begoun of the Cosmetics Cop website. Apply sunscreen whenever you will be outside. Some makeup has SPF protection, but you may still need an underlying layer of sunscreen.

2. Cleanser

A quality cleanser will remove dirt, makeup and excessive oil without drying your skin. You should clean you face twice daily, according to the Cleveland Clinic. You can use plain soap, but a cleanser formulated for your skin type would make the best choice. Skin types usually fall into four categories: oily, dry, normal and combination. If you have dry skin, for example, use a moisturizing cream cleanser.

3. Toner

Though toner is an often-ignored skin care product, toner removes any leftover residues from makeup, soap, dirt and oils. Toner refreshes and infuses the facial skin with antioxidants. It also helps prevent clogged pores. An astringent toner works best for those with oil-prone or combination skin. Avoid alcohol-based toners since they cause drying. Look for natural and botanical ingredients, such as witch hazel, cucumber and lavender.

4. Moisturizer

With the right ingredients, moisturizer soothes, protects and enriches your skin. It locks in moisture, keeping skin healthy and vibrant. Vitamins, antioxidants and anti-aging specific ingredients should all be included in your moisturizer. A good moisturizer will also help with collagen and elastin. Look for a moisturizer with vitamin C, retinol, copper peptides and hydroxy acids. These ingredients improve skin texture and tone, while aiding in preventing and repairing damage reports the Cleveland Clinic. If you have oily skin, choose a gel-based formula instead of oil-based.
