Being aware of the options, your child's activities and available websites are the best ways to keep him safe online.

Search Engines
If your child is working on a project or is just curious about a specific topic, the first place he might turn is a search engine. Unfortunately, this is like wading into the Pacific Ocean. He can easily go from safe, informative websites to dangerous. Sometimes, innocent search topics have multiple innuendos and meanings. Let your child use kid-safe search engines and show her how to weed through the search findings to discover the ones she wants.
Games and Activities
Many safe websites offer educational games that children will enjoy. These games can be found on government, educational and kid friendly sites. Check out PBS kids, Nick Jr., Disney and other similar websites. Surf through them yourself, before introducing them to your child. Find which games you think your child will like and learn from. When you are ready to let him play, show him the games you chose and how to get there.
Communication
Older kids will desire and can benefit from emails and other communication tools. These allow children to talk about homework, collaborate and share resources. Keep your child's password and address on hand, for yourself and him. Keep the computer in a family space and keep communication open with your child, so he isn't tempted to communicate inappropriately with his online friends.
Best Timing
If you want to encourage online learning, limit the amount of time your child spends surfing the Internet. If he needs to do his homework online, set aside some afternoon or early evening time for his time. For games or other fun learning activities, give her some time after her homework is finished. As children's homework and other responsibilities increase, give him more time on the computer. Unlimited time, however, may encourage him to check out what else the Internet provides.
Is It Worth It?
Although the Internet is a comprehensive source of information, it is not the only source. Carry your child to the library and let her search safely there. Then, let her supplement her library research with some safe online searching. Teaching her numerous resource materials will help keep her from becoming dependent on the Internet.
