Fashion Friday: Holiday Party Looks

With the holidays upon us, your calendar is most likely filling up with cocktail hours, office bashes, neighborhood get-togethers and family gatherings, and you are no doubt wondering what to wear on all of these festive occasions. Sequins have made a big comeback this season and are the perfect way to infuse your look with holiday cheer. Whether you want just a dash of shine or a whole lot of sparkle, there’s a sequined piece out there that’s right for you.

For a festive look with a casual twist, wear a sequined blazer, cardigan or jacket over a simple black dress. Above, I layered Theory’s zip-up sequined jacket ($695) over an Alexander Wang slip dress and paired it with nude heels to elongate the legs.

You can get a similar effect from a sequined blazer layered over a shift dress, as shown below. For an even more laid-back gathering, wear a sequined blazer or jacket over a black t-shirt or camisole and pair it with jeans, leggings, or black pants. A little bit of sparkle goes a long way!

Don’t want to invest in an entirely new outfit this season? Throw this light-catching, sequined cardigan over an old LBD, for a fresh holiday look!

Muted metallics are another big trend, and champagne-hued sequins hit just the right holiday note. A loose cut, like that of Theory’s shift or Aidan Mattox’s drop-shoulder dress, keeps the look sophisticated. (Fitted silhouettes mixed with sequins can look gauche in the wrong setting.) Opt for this look for an elegant event, like an office party or a sit-down dinner.

Cream and nude tones are very of-the-moment and will continue to be big for Spring, so now is the right time to invest in a chic neutral piece like this one by Parker.

For a big holiday bash, go out all. Herve Leger’s flirty halter dress combines a smattering of sequins on the fitted bustier top with flirty ruffles on the bottom, making it the perfect choice for a New Year’s Eve soiree or pre-Christmas cocktail party.

Another opulent option: Alice + Olivia’s knock-out black and gunmetal sequin dress. This curve-hugging number catches mega light and is the ideal choice for the woman who wants to make a statement.

If you’re more on the conservative side, J Crew does understated sequins expertly. This simple tank dress flatters most figures and also looks chic layered under a chunky sweater on chilly winter nights.
