How to Get Rid of Acne Scars

January 25, 2011 by ds_58890 Leave a Comment

Severe acne and family genetics make some individuals more prone to developing acne scars. If these acne scars are making you self-conscious, then seeking treatment will improve not just your skin, but your self-confidence as well. There is no one acne scar treatment that will work for every person. The type or types of treatments that are best for you will depend on your skin type and the severity of the acne scars. A dermatologist can best help you determine which treatment options are best for you to get rid of your acne scars.

Step 1

Use over-the-counter scar creams on your skin. Use as directed per the label’s instructions. These creams work best for the mild scarring and skin discoloration caused by acne.

Step 2

Make an appointment with a dermatologist if you have severe scarring or if the creams do not work for you. Only a dermatologist can recommend the right medical treatment for you after examining your scars.

Step 3

Discuss with your doctor the various acne scar treatment options. These include chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing, fractional laser treatment, injections into the scar, or surgery. You may learn that one treatment or a combination of treatments is best for you.

Step 4

Treat any active acne before treating the scars. If you have acne, then you may get more scars and need additional scar treatment. It’s better to clear up your acne before treating the scars.

Step 5

Talk to your dermatologist if you are taking isotretinoin. You may need to stop this medication six months before getting your acne treated. Taking isotretinoin while getting acne scar treatment may actually worsen your scars.
