Beauty Tips for Dark Spots on a Dark Skin

Even with dark skin, spots can still show. In general, darker-skinned people develop darker spots because of darker skin pigmentation. Spots caused by acne scars, bruising, freckles and moles can be unsightly and may still show through makeup if done improperly. Our beauty tips for dark spots will help you ensure your dark skin looks flawless.

Apply Concealers

Camouflage dark spots with concealing makeup. This is the first step before applying foundation and other makeup. Choose a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your skin tone, but with a high pigment content, to help the darker spot blend with your skin tone. Many cosmetics manufacturers have a line of makeup for dark skin; choose products that effectively cover red or dark spots. Testing the concealer you choose on a freckle or a vein–using your brush, with the tip of your finger to spread it evenly–will help you get the right shade. The dark spot should not be visible; therefore, apply the concealer thoroughly.

Select the concealer best suited for the area that you wish to cover. If the dark spots are on a delicate area such as under your eyes, choose a creamier version. Choose a drier version for other facial areas. Spread the concealer on the back of your hand, and blend it well with a brush before applying it over the dark spot. Doing so will help you achieve the right consistency. A synthetic brush will give you a smoother finish than a natural-hair brush. Apply the concealer on the dark spot using feathery strokes. At times, using your finger to apply creamier concealers may be best to ensure that the concealer attaches to your skin. Apply additional feathery strokes with the brush so the concealer does not appear blotchy under the foundation. Make sure to apply to surrounding areas so that it all blends well.

Apply Makeup

Applying loose face powder over the concealer will help keep it in place. Dip the sponge into the loose powder, tap off the excess, and apply in a blotting motion over the concealer. Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone, and make it twice as dark as the concealer to ensure the concealer will not show through. Use a separate brush applicator or sponge to apply the foundation. Applying lightly over the dark spots will ensure that the concealer will not rub off. Apply finishing powder to give a matte finish.

Use Whiteners

In some cases, you may be able to lighten acne-related dark spots and other dark skin blemishes with whitening or bleaching creams. Whitening and bleaching creams work by decreasing melanin production in the skin. They can help prevent further discoloration of your skin. Look for products with hydroquinone and kojic acid. Hydroquinone can lighten chloasma (melasma), freckles and dark spots, while kojic acid is a natural product that is an effective skin whitener.
