The history of Valentine’s Day is still a little bit of a mystery. In fact, the Catholic Church recognizes that there were a few guys named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend says that Valentine was a priest during third century Rome. When Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage because he thought single men made better soldiers than married ones, Valentine continued to marry couples in secret. He was put to death when Claudius III discovered what he had been doing.
