Spring Break Family Vacation Ideas

Spring break offers the perfect opportunity for you to schedule your family vacation. Unfortunately, it’s the same time that every other family in America is scheduling their vacation. This makes it not the best time to visit Disney World–the perennial family vacation favorite–but you’ll still find many places that could make a great vacation for your family.

Camping

When you need to save money, camping can be a great option. Since you’ve got a week, skip the nearby campgrounds and head out to one of the National Parks. You can still drive there instead of flying, and your children will stand in awe of the beautiful natural surroundings. Depending on where you live, you could visit the redwoods in California, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the Petrified Forest in Arizona or Acadia in Maine.

Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital offers a number of resources to families who are traveling. The museums at the National Mall all offer free admission and the opportunity to learn about history and science. If you are lucky, your spring break vacation will coincide with the blooming cherry blossoms.

Tropical Locales

In many areas of the country, spring time is not yet warm enough to go swimming. If you want to lie out by the beach, choose a tropical locale, such as Hawaii, southern California, the Caribbean or Mexico. Children can participate in a number of water activities, such as surfing, snorkeling and swimming.

Historical Adventures

Use spring break to learn about history through re-enactments. For example, you could learn about the Civil War in Gettysburg, go on a covered wagon tour in North Dakota or eat like the Pilgrims in Plymouth. To get your kids excited, choose a piece of history that they feel particularly attached to.

Fossil Hunting

Fossils represent a glimpse of our distant past and children who are interested in science or dinosaurs may enjoy searching for their own fossils. You can find areas that allow the public to go searching for fossils, such as the fossil bed in Clarkia, Idaho, and the Shark Tooth Creek Outdoor Adventures in Alabama.

Cruise

If you are looking for a low-stress solution, consider a cruise. Cruises offer the opportunity to travel to exciting locations and come with an all-inclusive price tag. Most cruise ships welcome children and have special programs designed for kids.
