Fish Oil as an Alternative Treatment for ADHD

November 2, 2012 by Madison Pados Leave a Comment

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is an ailment that is most common in children and causes behavior such as short attention spans, hyperactivity, inability to complete simple tasks or carry on conversations, and forgetfulness.

There have been many studies pertaining to the effects of fish oil on children with ADHD, and results have show that regular consumption of fish oil can reduce the symptoms of the disease.

An Overlooked Problem

The symptoms of ADHD are often overlooked as most children tend to be quite hyperactive anyway.  This is especially true for toddlers in the two and three year old range.  It can be nearly impossible keeping children in this age range under control.  With that said, many people think that ADHD is simply a made-up disease created for doctors to make more money.

However, this is far from the truth.  Scientific studies have proven that ADHD is, indeed, a real problem caused by chemical imbalances.  Children who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder typically have low levels of a brain chemical known as dopamine and a low RBC count.  They also have a high level of Arachidonic Acid as compared to Eicosapentaenoic Acid.

Discovering the Benefits of Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Most children with ADHD are treated with the doctor-prescribed medication known as Ritalin.  While Ritalin does increase the levels of dopamine in the brain, there are many side effects associated with the medication.  It can also be quite costly over the long-term.  However, recent studies have found an alternative treatment.

During the course of their many studies, scientists have found that Omega 3 fatty acids can help treat many of the symptoms of ADHD.  This is due mainly to the fact that Omega 3 fatty acids help to increase both dopamine levels in the brain and RBC counts as well.  They also help to level out the AA/EPA ratio to a normal range.

How Fish Oil Fits into the Picture

Since fish oil is a terrific source of Omega 3 fatty acids, scientists began studying the positive effects of fish oil on ADHD.  However, it is not advisable to eat large amounts of fish simply for the benefits derived from Omega 3 fatty acids.  This is because many fish are contaminated with toxins such as lead or mercury.

It is best for you to obtain the fish oil you need in the form of nutritional supplements.  In this way, you do not have to worry about any contaminants.  Some of the best supplements have been extracted from such fish as Hoki fish or tuna because are high in fatty acids.

Try to Encourage Healthy Eating

Eating a healthy diet can help reduce your child’s ADHD symptoms as well.  Eliminate such foods and drinks as candy, cookies, chips and carbonated beverages as they can increase your child’s hyperactivity.  Try to encourage your child to eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and juice when he or she wants a snack.

It can be very frustrating trying to calm down a child who has ADHD.  You may start to think that there is simply nothing you can do.  However, this is not true.  Studies have shown that fish oil can significantly reduce the symptoms of ADHD.
