Health Benefits of Drinking Tea

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Many people find that a hot cup of tea can soothe the mind and body, inspiring relaxation. However, it turns out that drinking tea can offer much more in terms of healing the body and protecting it from disease. At about one third the caffeine and the cost of coffee, a cup of tea delivers some surprising health benefits.

Antioxidant

Green, white and black teas are rich in antioxidant polyphenols, an element that helps the body defend itself against toxins. The polyphenols in tea have the ability to reduce risk of gastric and skin cancers, if consumed in quantity (up to six cups per day).

Boosting Metabolism

Green tea is particularly effective in boosting the body’s metabolic rate which, in turns, accelerates fat oxidation and improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin and tolerance of glucose. The caffeine in green tea can only take part of the credit, however. It’s the catechin polyphenols in green tea that boost thermogenesis, or the rate at which the body can burn calories.

Cardiovascular Health

Drinking at least three cups of black tea plays a role in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. The flavonoids in black tea can lower cholesterol levels and improve the function of blood vessels.

Hydration

Contrary to popular belief, a moderate amount of tea does not dehydrate the body and the skin. If you drink less that five cups of tea per day, it can actually boost hydration because it provides water content as well as healing antioxidants.
