Body Type Fashion Advice

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

When shopping for clothes, it is important to remember not to be swayed by a fashion trend that is wrong for your body type. No matter how “in” a piece of clothing is, it will look sloppy and ill constructed when put on a body it was never meant to complement. These tips will help you find clothing that will work for your body.

Big Butt

Downsizing an ample bottom is easily done with the right pants and tops. Pick jeans that have very simple back pockets that are high on the jean for the best look. Avoid pants that have fading or flap pockets on the tush. Jeans with a little stretch will hug and boost your butt, making it look nicer. Choose blouses, jackets and tees that end above the widest part of your butt. Avoid tops that stop right along the widest part. This draws attention to your problem area.

Small Butt

To add bulk to a small booty, choose jeans that have flap pockets and designs on the pockets. Tops that have ruffles that fall right along the widest part of your bottom add some extra visual padding.

Big Breasts

If you are well endowed, choose tops that have v-necks or open necks. Avoid any type of embellishment that goes across the breast area to avoid emphasizing the area. This goes for stripes, pockets, stand-alone prints and logos. To balance a large top, wear a dark color on top and lighter colored pants or skirt.

Small Breasts

With small breasts, it is important to remember to flaunt what you have and avoid covering up. Choose tops that hug your curves. Find tops that have patterns or decorations that bring attention to the breasts.

Big Hips

Women with big hips should stay away from pants with hip pockets, or at least stick to pants that have very simple pockets. Patch pockets and bedazzled pockets add bulk. Make sure that any low-ride pants are loose enough that they do not cut into the hips. Too-tight pants create an unsightly roll. Also choose pants that have a little stretch so that it hugs your curves. Boot cut jeans balance your wide hips with the bottom-half of your body, creating a nicer silhouette.

No Hips

If you have flat hips and would like some curve, choose pants that have patch pockets or decorative pockets. Low-ride pants draw attention to the hips, as well.
