How to Be Fashionable on a Budget

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Knowing you are wearing a great outfit can boost your mood and elevate your confidence. Wearing the wrong outfit leaves you feeling self-conscious. It is no wonder that fashion is such an important aspect in so many people’s lives. With unlimited funds, being a true fashion plate is no problem; the story is quite different for people who live on a tight budget. However, just because you cannot spend a fortune on clothing does not mean you cannot be fashionable on a budget.

Step 1

Add inexpensive accessories to your wardrobe. One stylish necklace, ring, handbag, bracelet or pair of earrings will instantly add pop to any outfit. Accessories give the appearance of an overall put-together look.

Step 2

Buy plenty of timeless pieces. Purchasing clothes that will continue to look good in the years to come will save money over time. Think jeans, simple knee-length skirts, plain blouses or classic pumps. These items have been popular for decades and will likely remain for years to come. Additionally, these timeless clothes can be paired with nearly any modern look.

Step 3

Purchase plenty of black, white, gray and navy touches. These neutrals are typically inexpensive and they go with everything. You can wear neutrals more often without drawing attention. These elements combined offer huge total savings to your wardrobe.

Step 4

Obtain several bright and fashionable items. Mix one high-fashion item with other neutrals and timeless pieces. The result is a high-fashion look for a budget cost.

Step 5

Try on everything in your price range that is remotely interesting. Many clothes look awful on the rack but great on the body. Since most people will not even bother trying on these seemingly atrocious clothes, you can get great deals on highly fashionable clothes and shoes.

Step 6

Check out the latest hair and makeup trends. Changing the way you do your hair and makeup typically costs no more than what you are used to paying for it anyway. Since even a basic jean and T-shirt outfit can seem fashionable with the right hairstyle, it makes sense to stay current in these trends.
