How to Choose the Right Style for Your Face

October 11, 2009 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

Hairstyles certainly aren’t one cut suits all. In fact, when it comes to choosing a hairstyle, it’s really important that you choose a style that best suits your face. While short and sassy may look great on someone with a square-shaped face, if you have a heart-shaped face you’d find that the same cut may make you appear heavier. If you want to choose the right style for your face, here’s how.

Step 1

Determine the shape of your face. You can easily determine the shape of your face with a measuring tape. Measure the length and width of your face and the width between your cheekbones. Also measure the length of your jawline. If your measurements show that the length of your face is about one and a half times that of its width, you have an oval-shaped face. If the length of your face measures more than the width, but less than one and a half times it, you have an oblong-shaped face. If the measurements are roughly equal, you have a round-shaped face. If your measurements are roughly equal and you have a square jawline and hairline, you have a square shaped face. If your face is widest at the cheekbones, you have a heart shaped face.

Step 2

Look through magazines for celebrities with the same-shaped face as you. Cut out pictures of celebrities whose hairstyles you like. This will help give you a visual of what different styles look like on your shaped face. To get you started, here is a list of face shapes and celebrities who have them.
Oval–Cindy Crawford
Oblong–Janet Jackson
Round–Drew Barrymore
Square–Demi Moore
Heart–Ashley Judd

Step 3

Discuss the styles you like with your stylist. While you’ve narrowed down which styles will look good on your face, your stylist will have to help narrow down which styles will work with your hair. For example, a style that requires fullness on top may not work for superfine hair.

Step 4

Make your final choice. After taking into consideration the styles you like that suit your shaped face and the styles that your stylist believes will work with your hair, choose the cut to go with. You’ll end up with a style that suits your face and a style your hair can pull off.

Warnings

  • The texture of your hair can affect how a style looks on you. If you’re looking to copy a celebrity style, choose one that has similar hair texture.
