Mural Ideas for Children’s’ Rooms

March 30, 2010 by ModernMom Staff Leave a Comment

A mural in a child’s bedroom adds personality and visual interest to the space. When painting a mural, an overhead projector is a handy tool for those without strong drawing skills. Project the selected image onto the wall and trace it with a pencil. Fill in the spaces with corresponding colors similar to a paint-by-number.

Themed Mural

Decorating themes are popular for kids’ rooms. Choosing a theme helps guide the decorating process and makes the room more interesting for the young inhabitant. Select an image that relates to the bedroom theme for the wall mural. A tree covered with vines and animals works well for a jungle-themed bedroom. A scoreboard fits into a sports-themed room. Choose a castle as the mural image for a princess bedroom. The mural emphasizes the room’s theme and helps tie all of the other decorative components together.

Name Mural

For a more general approach, create a wall mural of the child’s name. Choose a playful font that fits a child’s bedroom. Type the child’s name using the font in a word processing program. Print the name and turn it into an overhead transparency. Project the name onto the wall. Use different colors that fit the room’s overall decorating style. For more personality, add polka dots, stripes, stars and other designs to the letters. You can also add these images around the outside of the name to create more visual interest.

Child-Painted Mural

Older kids might enjoy painting their own room murals. Help them select an image that will work well in the room. The kids can also freehand the design, particularly if they are talented and drawing and paint. Teach them how to fill in each section of the image with paint. For an easier mural, let the kids press their handprints onto the wall. Whatever the design, a child-painted mural captures the child’s personality and artistic talents in a customized wall display.

Vinyl Sticker Mural

If painting a mural scares you, use vinyl wall stickers to create your mural. Several companies produce and sell the removable wall stickers. You’ll find them in numerous shapes and designs. Famous quotes and sayings are also popular for these wall stickers. Choose images that fit the room theme. Place them on the wall in a grouping that creates a mural. This option is much faster and you don’t have to worry about the quality of your painting.
